France was home to some of the most brilliant architects to set foot on our planet. They were pioneers in their chosen field, designing one architectural marvel after another, each better than its predecessor. From Jean de Chelles of the middle ages, to Roger Taillibert and Michel Pinseau of the post world war era, all these architects have carved a niche for themselves in their field . So, it is not surprising to see France being home to some of the greatest architectural wonders in the world.

Musee du Louvre

The Louvre palace is reputed to be one of the biggest palaces in the world. Other than the artwork on display, you can witness the attention to detail the architects have paid while constructing the palace.

Notre Dame

The list of architectural wonders in France will not be complete without the mention of this Gothic church. Other than the historical background, you can see the magnificent external structure. The church portrays the Madonna and child, the youth of Mary until the birth of Jesus. They are all depicted in different portals. The colorful and slender interiors are sure to capture the imagination of any architecture enthusiast.

Different Styles of Architecture You Can See in France

The Roman style of architecture is evident in the amphitheater at Nimes more than any other structure. The characteristics such as small, unused arches, domes and vaults can be found in it. The Pre-Romanesque style of architecture can be recognized in buildings such as Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Pres, St. Gereon in Cologne, etc. The Romanesque style of architecture, which consists mainly of ornamental arches, thick walls and lack of sculptures, can be evidenced in Saint-Etienne and Trinite Church in Caen. Angoulême Cathedral and Autun Cathedral are other examples of the Romanesque style of architecture.

The best example for medieval style of architecture in France is the Chatres Cathedral. Other examples of similar style include Sens Cathedral, Lyon Cathedral and Toul Cathedral. There are other styles of architecture like the renaissance style of which Château d’Amboise is an example, the Baroque style and the Rococo style which all belong to the pre-19th century age.

The Neoclassicism is probably the latest style of architecture you can find other than the modern buildings. There are many structures which stand as a testament to neoclassicism and you will be tired before you can visit all of them.

All these structures and different styles of architecture which are evident in France will attract the attention of any architecture enthusiast. If this prospect does not appeal to you, then you might have to reconsider your interests.
