She came to the station every day in the hope of finding her brother who was hanged for forging cheques. Sarah’s ghost has been seen on several occasions and people have reported of some inexplicable smell and feeling of immense sadness at the station.

British Museum Tube Station:

This London underground on Circle Line is abandoned as this was said to be haunted by the spirit of an Egyptian Princess who was long dead and whose remains are there near to the British Museum. A national newspaper once threw a challenge that a reward will be given to anyone who would dare to a night at the station but none accepted the challenge.

Farringdon Station:

Anne Naylor, a 13 year old hat maker was murdered by her trainer and her daughter in the year 1758. Travellers report to hear her shrieks resonating down the station.

In 1929, the Savoy underwent an interesting renovation which included a ceiling that was painted blue, to reflect sky, and also included seating that was to resemble flowers in various hues. The 1929 reopening brought the production of Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit" and "The Man Who Came to Dinner". "Legally Blonde" opened in 2009 due to frequent public acclaim! Currently at the Savoy, tickets can be purchased for, "The Sunshine Boys", starring Danny DeVito.

Three stories high, built in bricks, the mammoth Palace Theatre stands proudly. In 1891, dreamers, Thomas Edward Collcutt and Richard D'Oyly Carte, designed the building and desired that it become English grand opera's home. Arthur Sullivan's, "Ivanhoe" opened and ran for about six months. Upon the play's closing, Carte sold the theatre at a loss, since he did not have another play ready. "No, No Nanette" opened in 1911, under the theatre's new name, the Palace Theatre. The beloved, "Sound of Music" ran there in the 1960 era, while, "Jesus Christ Superstar" captured the 1970's. The world's most treasured production, "Les Miserables", had a nineteen year run at the Palace, until it was moved to the Queen's Theatre, where it is still playing!

Rich history, stunning old buildings and remarkable memories are only part of the experience that awaits one in a London theatre.

Brush Up on UK Driving Laws

Driving while traveling abroad can be a great way to see more of the location than you ordinarily would, allowing you to explore off the beaten track. A lack of viable public transport options is one reason many people choose to rent a vehicle to get around in. As road rules and signage in the UK can vary considerably from what you are used to, making sure you are aware of the differences is very important.

Drive on the Left

You must drive on the left at all times. Failure to do so will not only get you in trouble with the police but will likely cause an accident. For travelers who are tired or jet-lagged, you may want to put a little reminder sticker on your steering wheel or better still, wait until you are more awake. In addition, you will have to become accustomed to giving way to the right, not the left. You may find that all of these habits that have become more or less automatic take some time to correct.

But Stay On the Right Side of the Law

UK laws strictly prohibit overtaking on the inside lane, which is the far left, not the far right there. Drink driving is punished severely and any accidents that occur while you are intoxicated are judged to be your fault, even if other information suggests otherwise. Don't think that you can get away with jumping red lights or speeding as the UK and especially London is well known for its extremely dense traffic camera coverage. These cameras run number plate recognition software that makes driving undetected nearly impossible. Unless you want a stiff fine to arrive in the mail when you get back from your trip, stick to the speed limits and traffic signals.

A New Shape

You should also bare in mind the fact that most of the car will be to your right, so take it easy when first reversing or turning corners as the new dimensions can take some getting used to. Be prepared to clip a curb or two as you adjust. Another thing to remember is that the gearshift will be on your right hand side, so driving a manual will take even more adaptation on your part. Your best bet may be to play it safe and rent an automatic.

You're Not in Kansas Anymore

The price of gas, petrol in the UK, can be three times as much in the UK, so plan your trips accordingly. Another thing to do is to try to get a grasp on UK car terminology such bonnet for hood, boot for trunk, gearstick for gearshift, motorway for highway and give way for yield.

Apart from busy city street drivers, who are as aggressive and unyielding as in any city in the world, UK drivers are courteous and not menacing at all. In fact, the UK is one of the safest places in Europe to drive and, if you follow the rules and prepare yourself for the differences, you should very much enjoy driving through and exploring the country.

2) National Portrait Gallery – Located in the same huge building as the National Gallery, this gallery contains the world’s largest selection of portraits and faces, from early medieval times to today. The current main exhibition is a series of portraits by Lucien Freud. The gallery is open daily from 10am to 6pm. Free entry.

Tate Britain

3) Tate Britain – Tate Britain holds the largest collection of British art in the world. Its galleries show art from 1500 to today, from late medieval works to modern and contemporary art. Tate’s collection includes masterpieces by British artists such as Hogarth, Gainsborough, Constable, Millais, Burne Jones, Whistler, Sargent, Sickert, Hepworth and Bacon. The current main exhibition is “Picasso and British Art” – “A rare opportunity to see Picasso’s legacy and influence on British art.” Opening hours 10am – 6pm. Nearest tube is Pimlico.

4) Tate Modern – This gallery contains the best in British modern and contemporary art. Its located just down the river from the Tate Britain. The current exhibition is notably a Damien Hirst retrospective featuring all of Hirst’s notable works to date, including his famous shark in formaldehyde, titled “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living.” The theme of death runs through Hirst’s introspective display, and been seen to the key to unlocking Hirst’s work. There are plenty of things to do in Tate modern, including taking a guided tour, enjoying the displays, using the multimedia guides, plus learning to sketch in the gallery. Admission to Tate Modern is free, and the gallery is open 10am-6pm. Nearest tube is Pimlico.

5) Royal Academy of Arts – This well respected institution describes itself on its website thus: “The Royal Academy of Arts has a unique position of being an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects, whose purpose is to promote the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate.” The British artist David Hockney has an exhibition of his colourful works currently at the gallery.
